The PSYCOACH Project is an innovative initiative aimed at improving coach training in the sports field, with a particular focus on psychological aspects and communication. Funded by the European Commission through Erasmus+ Sport projects, PSYCOACH’s main objective is to enhance athletes’ performance and well-being through more conscious and effective coach interventions.

Objectives of the PSYCOACH project

The PSYCOACH project focuses on several key objectives that collectively aim to transform the way coaches approach sports training. These objectives include:

  • Enhancing psychological intervention:
    • Provide coaches with tools and knowledge to better understand the psychological aspects that influence athletes’ performance.
    • Promote the use of emotional regulation techniques, goal setting, and self-confidence development.
  • Optimizing Communication:
    • Train coaches in effective communication skills to improve interaction with their athletes.
    • Promote communication that motivates, supports, and constructively guides athletes.
  • Promoting Well-being and Inclusion:
    • Create a training environment that not only seeks athletic performance but also the overall well-being of athletes.
    • Develop strategies that promote inclusion and equity in sports, ensuring all athletes have the opportunity to thrive.

Structure of the PSYCOACH Course
The PSYCOACH course is structured into five thematic modules, each designed to address different crucial aspects of sports training. These modules are:

  • Understanding the Athlete:
    • Explore how coaches can better understand their athletes, identifying
      their needs and motivations.
    • Focus on the athlete’s attitude, highlighting positive and negative
      aspects that can influence performance.
  • Sports Performance and Psychological Skills:
    • Define what sports performance is and the psychological skills
      necessary to achieve it.
    • Provide practical strategies to develop these skills in athletes.
  • Effective Communication:
    • Teach communication techniques that coaches can use to improve
      their interaction with athletes.
    • Emphasize the importance of communication in team motivation and
      performance.
  • Tools for Conscious Training:
    • Introduce the intervention procedure based on Joan Vives’ chain of
      consciousness.
    • Provide practical tools to enhance awareness and concentration
      during training.
  • Giving an Opportunity to Inclusion:
    • Address the importance of inclusion in sports and how coaches can
      foster an inclusive environment.
    • Provide strategies to ensure all athletes, regardless of their
      backgrounds, feel valued and supported.

Methodology and Resources
The PSYCOACH course employs a practical and accessible methodology designed to be completed in approximately two and a half months. Coaches will have access to an online platform where they can view training videos, access practical resources, and participate in a discussion forum.

Interaction and Continuous Support
To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, the course includes two live Zoom sessions. These sessions will take place after modules 2 and 3, and again after modules 4 and 5, allowing participants to clarify doubts and deepen their understanding of the acquired knowledge.
The discussion forum is another key tool of the course, where coaches can share experiences, resolve doubts, and receive support from both peers and the instructional team.
